Modest clothing designer, Kadiatou Diallo, a Guinea West Africa native and graduate of Chicago's International Academy of Design & Technology is the founder of Chicago-based brand La Merveille by KD, a chic and luxurious modest clothing wear for special events whose inspiration derives from the designer's motherland, art and vibrant colors.
The concept for Kadiatou's second launched line, 'Simple by KD', are everyday-edgy modest pieces that use African lepi tie-dye fabric-- generally the natural color extraction for the dyeing process derives from plants, wood, minerals among some depending on the region. This laborious process from weaving, dye-making and block printing involves and brings together families and towns. The extensive process goes beyond its surface value to a form of preservation of culture. The fabrics used in Kadiatou's second line are exclusively made in Guinea and Senegal and are 100% cotton. One of our favorite pieces from her new line is the 'Black Tie Dye Striped Full Skirt'. You can also find a casual suit, peplum dress and jumper made in the African lepi tie-dye fabric.
"I like to incorporate many different types of fabric in my collections. For Simple by KD, I used a total of 7 different types of fabrics. For the La Merveille line, I used silk velvet, silk, satin and organza, because these fabrics are perfect for occasional wear. They look and feel very glamorous." - Kadiatou
For her new line, the designer uses in addition to the beautiful African lepi tie-dye fabric other forms of fabrics as well; jersey, polyester and knit with spandex; seen on the colorblock dress and red stripe hoodie dress. Simple by KD also makes a point with 'easy wash and wear' on its pieces; making it ideal for frequent and everyday use.
"All the garments are locally made in Chicago! The clothing patterns, fabric selection, cutting and sewing are all done under La Merveille by KD. I want to make sure all of the clothing are unique styles and beautifully made so I am involved in the process from start to finish." - Kaditou
