Rushda is a fashion and lifestyle blogger based in Capetown, South Africa. Upon coming across her blog, we automatically became attracted to the gracefully and effortless way she radiates her individuality through her clothing, family and modest lifestyle which lead us to have a style talk with her on faith, fashion, family and life.
What inspired you to start your style blog?
[Rushda] I had recently decided to take a sabbatical from the corporate world, and having always been intrigued with fashion, I decided to start blogging as an expression of my style. It was also to share my passion with like minded individuals.
In one sentence, what statement does your style blog make?
[Rushda] I believe that one can dress modestly whilst maintaining the stylish factor.
How do you balance the roles(mommy, daughter, wife, friend..) in your life?
[Rushda] This is hard, but being a wife and mother is the most rewarding experience, even though I loved being a career woman. I am lucky that my employer understands the value of work life balance, and they understand that although I value my job and give it 110%, my family is always my top priority.
Describe the modest style scene right now in South Africa?
[Rushda] South Africa has a big Muslim population, and even though there was always a lot of women dressing modestly in this western community, it has been getting a lot of attention recently. It has become important to the younger generation to embrace modest dressing, hence the emergence of modest fashion blogs in SA. It’s still in infant stages, and I am really excited to see it grow.
What’s one of the happiest moments of your life?
[Rushda] My wedding day was one of the happiest moments of my life, starting a new life with so much promise. And the days my sons were born, Algamdulilah!
How would you describe your style?
[Rushda] I have a multifaceted style. I enjoy mixing things up and doing things differently. One day, I can be elegant and formal, and the next I will do street style casual- all in my own unique way and maintaining the modesty factor.
What do you think about the popularity that modest style is getting across the world?
[Rushda] This is one of the most exciting things to have happened to fashion! It is inspiring to see designers taking heed of this market and bringing modest designs to the runway- designs that can be worn by anyone, in fact.
If you could change one thing in this world, what would it be?
[Rushda] The inhumane wars on the helpless. I believe in peaceful conciliation, being just and fair and eradicating political corruption and greed. Unfortunately all ‘pie in the sky’ dreams.
You name Audrey Hepburn as one of your style icons, how does your style relate to her?
[Rushda] I like the fact that she always looked beautiful, in a classic way. She also believed in inner beauty being more important that external beauty- which is something that I believe in strongly.
What advice would you give someone who is trying to balance their style and faith?
[Rushda] I may not be an expert and can only refer to my own experience. Balancing your style and faith, is a journey, one that I am still travelling on. But my faith has always been a big part of who I am, I have always practised it and I felt that my outward appearance needs to reflect how committed I am to my faith. As I said, I am still on my journey and am in no way perfect, but I would advise that each individual should do what makes them feel comfortable and do it with sincerity from the heart. It does not matter what the rest of the world says or thinks, it’s between you and your Allah. Only Allah knows what’s in your heart.
You state that you love books, what’s your favorite read of all time and why?
[Rushda] My favourite book is the Great Gatsby, it symbolises the eternal hopeful nature of humans, and how love can be a driving force in life. It also highlights the selfish nature of humans, and highlights the big divide between the haves and the have nots. As much as one thinks that love can conquer all, it is always squashed by self preservation and greed.
What would you say is your signature style in your outfit?
[Rushda] My style is unique, classic with a fun twist. I will usually pair classics, with trendy and fashionable pieces in the mix.
