Last week was powerful! It always is when wisdom speaks and when it unfolds through a woman, be ready! If I have learned anything about nourishing the inner self is that one has to be willing to listen. Tonya Lewis Lee, producer, lawyer, mom, health advocate and wife to iconic director Spike Lee was a guest at The Wing in New York, a women workspace, club and community space. She spoke on the power of the self, the importance and accessibility of quality healthcare for all women, and about entrepreneurship through her new business venture Movita, an all-natural and organic wellness brand.
So much was unloaded about the dynamics of being a woman living in America I felt we’re not making lemonade anymore, more like unsweetened cocktails of all the bullshit thrown at us. We’re targeted from all angles; our bodies, our spirit, our faith—making for more of a reason to take actions to contrast the pain. And Tonya Lewis Lee couldn’t have said it better, “Women are under attack!” But, let’s keep a realistic perspective on the women attack experience, Black women attack is painful levels different, it has always been. One example is James Marion Sims, a man who surgically experimented on enslaved black women without anesthesia to learn about the reproductive health of a woman. And more presently, Tonya Lewis Lee made a point, “This is the United States of America. It shouldn’t be that women die at child birth. It shouldn’t be that babies die after a live birth before their 1st birthday at the rate that they do.”
How do you move forward from generational trauma our bodies carry? How do we fight back against our present day personal trials as women? How do we heal so our daughters and granddaughters inherit healthy bodies? One way is by keeping a strong mind. Here are a few ways Tonya Lewis Lees suggests.
Take Care of Yourself
We’re always taking care of others. It’s important to ask how are we keeping ourselves primary? And seriously think about and understand that concept. If you don’t have anything to give, it’s not good for anyone.
Know your limits
We just have to know how to say ‘no’. Yes, we know we can do it all, but it doesn’t mean we should. It goes back to taking care of yourself.
“This is the United States of America. It shouldn’t be that women die at child birth. It shouldn’t be that babies die after a live birth before their 1st birthday at the rate that they do.”
Use Your Energy Wisely
We have to pick our battles and be very mindful of who we surround ourselves with because energy is not just applying thyself, it is also taken from us through presence.
Read For Mental Wellness
One way to normalize health for women is found not just in exercise, eating well and surrounding ourselves with good energy, but also in being informed. As the saying says, ‘A well read woman is a dangerous creature.” But also there’s healing in being informed!
